Christ caring for people through people

What is a Stephen Minister?

Stephen Ministers are members from our congregation family that possess compassion and a desire to care for people that are experiencing hurt in whatever form it takes. These caring individuals receive training at Lord of Life to provide one to one Christian care for people experiencing difficulties such as:

  • Loss of a loved one
  • Unemployment or a job crisis
  • Hospitalization
  • Divorce or separation
  • Spiritual Crisis
  • A chronic illness
  • Relocation
  • Empty Nest
  • Leaving home for college/career
  • Incarceration
  • Aging
  • Birth, adoption, miscarriage or infertility
  • Many other life challenges

What can you expect from your Stephen Minister?

When you recognize your particular life struggle, you will receive from your Stephen minister a compassionate friend. Someone that will provide a trusting environment, willing to listen and pray with you. Someone that meets faithfully with you once a week. Someone that understands the need for confidentiality. Someone that is being used by Jesus to provide care.

What you can expect from serving as a Stephen Minister

When you help others you also help yourself. Read what Dr. John Ortber, pastor of Menlo Park Presbyterian Church said regarding Stephen Ministry in his church. “Stephen Ministry is helping our congregation in a number of ways. One is by building the spiritual and emotional life of the people who give care. I think a lot of people go into Stephen Ministry to help others but then are surprised by how much it enriches their own heart and relationships.”

Ephesians 2:10 tells us we are created to good works. 1 Peter 4:10-11 tells us we are gifted to serve others and bring glory to Christ in doing so.

The Stephen Ministry training will equip you on how to communicate and help people that are suffering. You’ll gain an understanding of what to say that is helpful and how to avoid saying things that are not helpful.
